📖 Word For The Day: Worship Christ For His Sacrifice

Today’s Word for the Day comes from 1 Peter 1:18-19. We will be looking at the Person Who saved us and how we can respond to Him. Please read 1 Peter 1:18-19 at this point.

WHAT:
Verse 18 informs us that Christ “redeemed” or “ransomed” us from our former life. Christ paid a ransom of His own death to liberate us from eternal death. Verse 19 describes Jesus Christ as a “lamb without blemish”. This description of Christ is taken directly from the Old Testament. The Passover account in Exodus 12:5 says God called for a “lamb without blemish”. 1 Corinthians 5:7 tells us that “Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed”. The principle for today is stated in the form of a question: How should we worship Christ for His sacrifice that redeemed us from eternal death and gave us eternal life?

SO WHAT:
A few verses later we find two ways in which we can worship Christ for this new life He secured for us. 1 Peter 1:22 says that we are to “obey the truth” and we are to “love one another from a pure heart”. One way to thank God is to love one another. 1 John 4:7 informs us “ Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” If we are truly born again we can love one another because God has given us the ability to do so. Second, if we are to “obey the truth” we can demonstrate our love for Christ with a life of obedience. In John 15:14 Jesus tells His disciples that if we “are His friends if you do what I command”. In other words, a life of obedience is a life of worship towards God.

NOW WHAT:
So we are shown two ways to thank our Great God and Savior for His gift of new life: love one another, love God with a life of obedience. Perhaps there is no better way to say thank you to God then you love one another and to love Him. Some of you know I served 20 years is a US military life-saving service. I was blessed to be a part of the rescue of a number of people from death on the oceans. You might be surprised to hear very few of these people rescued actually thanked us. This isn’t really a problem because we only were used by God to save their lives. But Jesus Christ did much more for us. He rescued us from eternal death AND gave us a new life to live for Him.
